Second shift.
Same old PC.
It used to help run a FADAL CNC machine.
Now it runs my website and game servers.
Retirement was apparently not an option.
From making chips
to serving pages.
Before this was a server, it was a PC we used at work to run a FADAL CNC machine. Rather than leave useful hardware without a job, I gave it another one.
This is my first server: part practical project, part learning experience, and part excuse to find out what all those settings do.
The computer changed careers. I accidentally became tech support.
The workhorse.
Repurposed hardware.
A perfectly good place to start.

A new job for an old PC.
A new set of things for me to learn.

02 / A FEW THINGS IT DOESYou're looking at it.
This website is one of its jobs. A little corner of the internet, running on a PC with an unexpectedly long résumé.
Visit the homepage →Still playing games.
It also serves as a game server. The work may have changed, but getting machines to do what I want remains a recurring theme.

Linux, websites, files, permissions, and the quiet realization that “I'll just make one change” is never one change.

Self-inflicted.
My first server. Still figuring things out.
The enthusiasm is genuine. The expertise is under construction.
Old hardware still has useful work to do.
This didn't start with a shopping list for a new server. It started with a PC that already existed and a reason to keep using it.
The small jobs teach you things.
Getting a page online was the exciting part. Learning why I couldn't delete a folder was the character-building part.
“It works” is a milestone.
Then comes the part where I understand why it works, make it easier to manage, and resist improving it into a non-working state.
No grand master plan.
Just a useful old computer and a growing list of things I've learned.
